Match Report – Poole Town (A)

Poole Town 0-2 Dorchester Town

Wednesday 27.11.2019 – National League Youth Alliance

The Magpies finally got off the mark in the National League Youth Alliance with an outstanding 2-0 victory over local rivals Poole Town. Both sides sat in the bottom three of Division E, with Dorchester occupying the bottom spot.

Academy Manager Mark Robinson was dealt a late blow in his team plans, when usual captain Alfie Toland came down ill the night before. Liam Fredericks maintained his spot in goal, with Harry Ackerman and Josh Hickman completing a back three with Lewis Harrington. Jack Steele, who captained the side in Toland’s absence playing the holding role with Harry Boulton and Joel Hewitt in the more advanced roles. Matthew Chambers and Dan Sheehy filled the wide positions with Charlie Gosney and Charlie Darlow up front.

The home side, managed by Magpies first team goalkeeper Nick Hutchings, started brightly. The Magpies defence had to be on top form with Fredericks commanding his area well. After a tense first half a hour, it was The Magpies who took the lead with Hewitt showing a bit of magic from a throw in, turning his defender and firing into the far corner.

It was two only a few minutes late. Gosney got onto the end of a superb long ball and having beat his marker, slotted past the Poole goalkeeper. The Magpies remained tight until the break, with a couple of penalty shouts waved away by the referee.

The second half saw a superb defensive display from the young Magpies. Poole thought they had a way back into the game but a clearance off the line by Hickman kept Dorchester’s two goal lead.

The Magpies always looked dangerous on the counter. Chambers beat his defender down the right hand side and his ball across the box looked destined to be put away by Sheehy, but it cleared the County Ground car park.

Dorchester remained solid throughout the remaining minutes and there was joyous scenes at full time, with The Magpies leaping off the bottom of the table.
